The Hippest Speakeasy on the Island!

By: Brian Sjarief |

40 Thieves takes you to the Lower East Side with their New-York-style speakeasy bar.

In this island jam-packed with nightclubs and bars, you rarely find bars, let alone speakeasy bars, that are marvelously designed with great details, serves craft cocktails, artisanal spirits and plays great music. Owned by award-winning mixologist and bar entrepreneur, Shah Dillon, 40 Thieves is a hidden gem and one of, if not, the only true speakeasy bars you can find in Bali. A concept not that common in Indonesian nightlife, you can find this speakeasy rested just above the ramen bar, Mad Ronin. As you make your way through the back of Mad Ronin, just right next to the bathroom, you’ll find a path that leads to a staircase to the second floor, and voilà, the door to 40 Thieves lies before your eyes.

The industrial interior, the bare concrete walls, and the moody lighting gives a 1920s Great Gatsby era feel to it. The great attention to details from the decorations to the glassware further enhances the New York vibe, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a bar right in the heart of Manhattan. Guests have a choice of sitting on the bar where you can have an intellectual conversation with the mixologists, the leather seats against the wall or the sofas for a more comfortable seating to have a more intimate conversation with friends. At the back of the bar is the infamous bookcase boogie where it gets a little rowdy later in the evenings with some of Bali's best known DJs accompanying you with great disco tunes til closing time.

40 Thieves offers a handful selection of innovative cocktails that range from popular classics to surprising concoctions brewed up by the mixologists. The masterminds behind this establishment have crafted a unique menu consisting of 8 classic cocktails with each having their own twist with creative names. These classic cocktails include the refreshing Thai Whore Smash; which is Lemongrass-bathed vodka shaken vigorously with citrus, basil and spiced syrup, the invigorating Bootlegger’s Mule; vodka, lime an bitters topped with a healthy dose of their own house-fermented Bathtub Ginger Beer, Johnny Appleseed; white rum shaken relentlessly with lime, their homemade nutty apple Falernum, Spiced Gimlet; vodka, citrus and house-spiced syrup, Room 010; Wild turkey 101 bourbon stirred down with creme de cacao, Bianco vermouth and bitters, Pomeloma; tequila with lime and a pomelo, macadamia nut, and cayenne pepper cordial, then topped with soda, Tropical Tea Time; vodka shaken with Earl Grey tea, crème de violette, mango, and lemon, served straight up and their Boogie & Bourbon Julep; Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon Swizzle with fresh  mint, elderflower, Szechuan pepper, and dashes of bitters.

40 Thieves does not limit themselves with the cocktails on the menu. The mixologists will be more than happy to fix you up with other classic cocktails you have in mind. If you are one for surprises, then the expert and insightful mixologists behind the bar are ready to conjure up special cocktails for you. All you need to do is tell the mixologists with your preference in cocktails, whether you like them sweet, sour, creamy, bitter, earthy or whatever your preference is. They also serve craft beers and various other spirits from their vast collection displayed at the bar.

If you want some bites to go along with your cocktails, 40 Thieves have several light bar bites such as the Mac & Cheese Balls with garlic truffle mayo & chilli dip, Popcorn Chicken with wasabi mayo & chilli dip and their Hawt AF Gyoza with a choice of pork, chicken or vegan.

This vintage New York glam speakeasy bar is a prized gem adored by many, located in the popular district of Petitenget. 40 Thieves’ amazing cocktails, timeless setting, elegant décor and genuine flamboyant hospitality makes it a comfortable and exquisite place to hang out and have a great time with friends and loved ones.
