Cherishing the Essentials at The Forge GastroPub Bali

It’s not the first attempt we’ve seen at an English-style pub in Bali, but it’s the first to get it right.

To earn the title of ‘Gastro Pub’, we want to be reminded of that small town pub cheer, the generous selection of beers on tap and the smell of Shepard’s Pie wafting from the kitchen. And you’d best have our favorite sports playing, with a view of the action from every seat. So you can imagine our delight (and surprise) when we entered The Forge. The classic long bar, the row of craft beers on tap and a view into the kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven. Pub atmosphere – check.

We took our seats on the terrace and ordered from a menu that looked like a medley of our fantasy comfort foods. And to make matters yet more nostalgic, An English Man in New York, was playing on the speakers. Can I just put a permanent reserve on this table?

We all ordered pints of different beers on tap. This alone was worth the experience. The first drop of that refreshing ale, an escape from the dreary lack of variety we’ve reluctantly become accustomed to in Bali.

In the name of good journalism, we also ’researched’ the cocktail selection and can conclude the premium alcohol they use makes all the difference. The drinks were outstanding. Although we feel that we may have to return again for a phase 2 study that involves an even larger sample size. In the name of journalism of course. As the afternoon turned to evening, the DJ took over the music vibe and filled the pub with classic musical memories from the 70s, 80s and 90s. We ordered more beer, smoked some shisha and sang along in our best boozy voices.

The food, the drinks, the service were all ten out of ten. But the star of the show was the atmosphere. A venue worthy to be called a Pub. And at last we now know, when we’re all in the mood for a melody, The Forge will get us feeling alright.
